I saw her there, sitting on the dock. Her legs hung loosely over the side, not quite touching the water. She looked alone, so I approached her.
"Why are you not swimming?" I asked her.
"I am afraid of the fish." She told me.
"Then why are you so close to the edge?"
"I long for the touch of the water."
We continued talking for nearly an hour, I watched as her pale legs gradually began to darken. Her mother called her in for dinner, and she turned and smiled at me.
"Goodbye." she said quietly.
"Farewell." I replied.
She brushed the loose hair from her face and stood up. Carefully, she began putting her shoes on.
"Will...I see you again?"
"You will see me...always." I replied.
She smiled and walked back into her house. As I watched her back, I knew I would never see her again. For it was forbidden to talk to humans.
I am the ocean,
the slowly mounting tide.
The love I have for her,
you shall never find.
Forever I will be here,
watching as she grows.
I'll hear her calling my name,
but to her I'll never go.
A forbidden love is all I have for show.
